How to Successfully Rattle in Big Bucks

Hunting aggressive can be one of the best ways to get a big buck.

However, you also have to hunt smart. Aggressive hunting is sometimes what is needed to get a big buck out of his bed and into range. One of the keys to rattling and creating a realistic scene is to use real rattling horns. Any set of sheds can be used, but I have a set that I’ve used for years, and they’re big. I like the sounds of them. But, here are a few steps to making your very own set.

1.) Find a nice set of sheds or look online.  Many people who find big sheds try to sell them online and you can get a good deal if you keep your eyes open.  I prefer a heavy 8 for rattling horns.

2.) Saw off the brow tines. This step may hurt if you found these sheds yourself, but I can promise you it will hurt your thumbs much more when they smash together.  (Take it from me, I tried to skip this step and paid the price!)

3.) Drill two holes through the bases or wrap a string around the bases. A piece of leather or nylon cord will work well.  Having them secured together will be extremely helpful so you can throw the set over your shoulders or pull them up your treestand. Too, by doing this, you not lose them as easily.

Now that you have the perfect set of ratting horns, grab a grunt tube or two and head out to the field. Find the thickest location on your property and do some rattling sequences. I like to throw out a few soft grunts. Add in a snort wheeze, then rattle for about a minute while hitting brush all around. The most important thing is to be patient. Do not setup, rattle, and take right off to the next location. Wait about 15-minutes so you don’t spook deer off and stay alert! Bucks may come in silent and slowly so always be looking everything over and stay ready!
